Alzheimer's Journey
There are no more happy birthdays or happy anniversaries
They are in the past now, just fading memories.
This journey changes everything, nothing is the same
The person you shared your life with no longer knows your name.
Some friends who have known you no longer do you see
What is the point, they say, they don't remember me.
Don't ask them to remember, just reminisce stories of the past
They will enjoy your company while that moment lasts.
They sit alone in their room with no one else around
I wonder what is on their mind, what memory have they found?
They stand at the mirror conversing with a friend.
They don't know the reflection speaking back is them.
They while away the hours standing or sitting there
Do they ever wonder why they are left alone right here?
There are strangers who approach wanting them to go
They are reluctant, they're people they don't know.
They want them to bathe & shower, they don't understand.
Give them patience & comfort, try to hold their hand.
Speak slowly & speak clearly, do not try to hurry
Rushing this process will only cause them worry.
Assure them they can do it themselves, if they need your help you're here.
Let them have their dignity, It will alleviate their fears.
Warm the water, close the curtain, give them privacy
Pass them soap & shampoo, they will do a good job, you'll see.
They spent their life with people, like to interact pleasantly.
When their left alone in their room, there's no one there to see.
Their eyes light up with joy when little children come around
they don't have to know them, It's happiness they've found.
Come out to visit them, while away an hour.
To provide company & happiness: it is your power.
They are robbed of the future, can't remember the past
Give them pleasure in the moment, is that too much to ask?
Don't stay away & avoid this person you once knew.
Reach out, still be a friend, you know, this could be you
